Hey Krause

Hound and I finally saw Kiki's delivery service last night. What a quaint and sweet little movie. Seriously made me want to be a witch. I do love Miyazaki's work. You can see how his other work has evolved from this movie. Was this his first?

I can't remember if it was Russian or not, but Kiki is a nickname for Christine in one of those eastern block languages.

So glad you finally saw it! It's one of my biggest faves. It's so sweet without being TOO precious. And, I really love the music, so soothing. It's one of those kid movies I can definitely handle over and over. Madeline saw it for the first time at about 2, and it was the first movie she sat all the way through. LOVE Miyazaki San. Just bought "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" but I haven't managed to get all the way through it. Not that it's too long, just bad parenting luck, the children conspiring against me. I still haven't seen all his work though, and I'm not sure where "Kiki" falls timeline wise. Before "Princess Mononoke"? Definitely before "Spirited Away". Apparently there's one with a very dapper talking cat that's supposed to be super-cute. Must. Find. Soon.

Yeah, it was very sweet. Haven't heard of Nausicaa, but Ly probably has. I think "Kiki" was first and came out in 89'. I do know it was before both "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away".

Just so you both know, there's a review of "Kiki's Delivery Service" buried in my (inchoate) post today.

"Kiki" is before "Mononoke", I think even before "Castles in the Sky".

I really want to see "Howl's Moving Castle" (featuring voice work by Christian Bale), the most recent.

I'm not familiar with "Nausicaa". Do you know where that one falls?

Kiki was 1989. Nausicaa was 1984 -- not the first Miyazaki movie, but the first one that really feels like a Miyazaki movie. At least to me. Castle of Cagliostro was before that and I know some people love it, but to me it just doesn't have that indefinable Miyazaki thing. My Neighbor Totoro comes between Kiki and Nausicaa, and it's an absolute must-see.

Although there's an early series of animated shorts, Panda! Go Panda! that has a nice proto-Miyazaki feel to it.

If you ever get a chance to see a Miyazaki movie where he's there for a Q&A, go. He's gracious and funny and talks about a mile a minute, so it's entertaining watching his translator try to keep up.

Ms. Stacey, a fountain of movie knowledge. Thanks for the information my dear. Nice to see you here.

Heya! I still haven't seen Kiki, but I pretty much want to be a witch every day. Not a broom riding one--but a standing on cliff, arms raised, calling on the powers of nature one. :) ;)
